Club Receives Grant from Dollar General Literacy Foundation to Support Summer Literacy

[Joplin, MO][May 15, 2015] – This week, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded the Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Missouri a $3,000 grant to promote summer literacy.

This funding will assist the Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Missouri to establish a summer buddy reading program to increase the reading levels of Club kids.  This program will target 50 children who are performing below grade level in reading, math, and science.  Buddies will meet with their reading mentor once per week for 30 minutes and complete pre- and post-tests to determine their reading level.  Goals for the 2015 summer buddy reading program include 30 students will increase their reading comprehension by one grade level, 35 students will be at grade level reading by the program completion, and 50 students will report increased self-esteem.
